Mitigation of Reliance on Old Thermal Generation

Summary

The CAISO is hosting a stakeholder meeting on May 1, 2008 to present the Old Thermal Generation Phase I Report which documents the reliability risks associated with removing generation units utilizing Once-Through-Cooling technology from service.

Main Text

In September 2007, the California ISO (CAISO) initiated a three phase study to analyze the impacts to grid reliability if older thermal generation, including those units using once-through-cooling technology, are retired or required to undergo retrofit in compliance with proposed California regulatory requirements. 

 

The CAISO is hosting a stakeholder meeting on May 1, 2008 to:

 

• Present the Phase I Report which analyzes the local and system reliability requirements
• Seek input from stakeholders
• Outline the tasks required to complete the remaining phases of this activity
