Flex Your Power is California's statewide energy efficiency marketing and outreach campaign. Initiated in 2001, Flex Your Power is a partnership of California's utilities, residents, businesses, institutions, government agencies and nonprofit organizations working to save energy. The campaign includes a comprehensive website, an electronic newsletter and blog and education materials.

Flex Your Power has received national and international recognition, including an Energy Start Award for Excellence.  The California ISO has been involved with this important conservation program from its inception.

Conservation When It’s Needed Most
The Flex Alert Network is a public education and notification system created in 2004 by Flex Your Power, the investor owned utilities, and the California Energy Commission to help manage summer peak-electricity demand. Flex Alert Network partners educate residents, businesses and local government about the key peak load-shift and peak conservation measures to take to lower demand and help mitigate low power reserve situations.  Reserves can be low due to high peak demand, adverse weather and unplanned generation outages or transmission problems.

The California ISO triggers when a Flex Alert is needed based on system conditions or forecasted demand.  On critical days the partners use media, websites and email to notify Californians when conservation and load-shifting measures are needed to immediately reduce electricity demand on the grid.

  • Businesses, governments and residents are notified through media and email to reduce use.
  • Bulletins are regionally targeted to where the system is stressed.
  • Consumers are asked to reduce their use of lighting, air conditioners and major appliances until after 7 p.m.

Does Conservation Really Work?
Absolutely! In 2001, Californians worked together and flexed their power to reduce peak demand by an historic 14 percent.  More recently, conservation played a critical role in 2006 by helping the state weather a historic heat wave and record demand (see news release from August 2006).
