Flex Your Power is California's statewide energy efficiency marketing and outreach campaign. Initiated in 2001, Flex Your Power is a partnership of California's utilities, residents, businesses, institutions, government agencies and nonprofit organizations working to save energy. The California ISO has been involved with this important conservation program from its inception.

Conservation When It’s Needed Most
Flex Your Power NOW! bulletins notify California businesses, governments and the general public when conservation and load-shifting measures are needed to immediately reduce electricity demand on the grid. The bulletins are deployed via electronic and media notifications when electricity reserves are nearing Stage One Electrical Emergency levels. TV and radio advertising campaigns help get the word out about what to do when a Flex Your Power NOW! day is called.

  • The California ISO triggers Flex Your Power NOW! bulletins based on system conditions or forecasted demand
  • Businesses, governments and residents are notified through media and email to reduce use.
  • Bulletins are regionally targeted to where the system is stressed.
  • Consumers are asked to reduce their use of lighting, air conditioners and major appliances until after 7 p.m.

Does Conservation Really Work?
Yes! In 2001, Californians worked together and flexed their power to prevent blackouts, reducing peak demand by an historic 14 percent.
