The California ISO Department of Market Monitoring has posted the 2022 Annual Market Issues and Performance Report and has scheduled a stakeholder web conference on July 28 to discuss reported analysis and findings.
The 2022 annual report provides highlights of significant market changes and performance. In the California ISO, total wholesale electric costs rose by 69 percent, increasing to $21.6 billion or about $95/MWh. Natural gas prices increased across the West and in the California spot market, driving electricity prices up.
Expansion of the Western Energy Imbalance Market helped improve the overall structure and performance of the real-time market in the CAISO and other participating balancing areas. In 2021, four new balancing areas joined the Western Energy Imbalance Market.
Summer supply margins were bolstered by market design changes and the integration of additional capacity. The report finds that the ISO and energy imbalance markets continued to perform efficiently and competitively. The California ISO Department of Market Monitoring has posted a special report on battery storage with a review of battery storage resource performance and market issues.
