New EDAM training sessions will provide valuable insights for market participants

With the Extended Day-Ahead Market (EDAM) moving swiftly towards launch next spring, the California ISO is pleased to offer two instructor-led training sessions for scheduling coordinators, market participants, and others interested in learning about enhancements to the day-ahead market and EDAM implementation.

“These sessions will be an excellent way to build the skills and knowledge needed to effectively participate in the new extended day-ahead market,” said Radha Madrigal, a senior expert in customer education who will conduct the sessions. “Even organizations not planning to participate in EDAM immediately will gain valuable insights to help inform future participation decisions.”

In addition to addressing the market rules and protocols for EDAM, these training sessions will cover the ISO’s Day-Ahead Market Enhancements (DAME), and the EDAM ISO Balancing Authority Area participation rules.

The first training session will be held online on Monday, August 18, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. PST. This session is ideal for scheduling coordinators who manage energy and market transactions for generators, load-serving entities, energy storage systems, and other market participants in the wholesale energy market.

“The courses will cover all aspects of EDAM market processes and products, from bidding procedures and tool changes to the end-to-end flow of data from bid submission to final settlement,” Madrigal said.

“We are preparing to launch a market simulation with our customers in September, which is an important milestone on the path to EDAM implementation,” added Heidi Carter, also a lead trainer at the ISO who will be leading the webinars. “These training sessions are designed to equip participants with the knowledge and confidence to successfully participate in the market simulation.”

The second training session will take place online Wednesday, August 20, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. PST. It will cover market settlement processes with a focus on how scheduling coordinators can accurately reconcile charges and payments related to energy transactions.

Seven utilities across the West have committed to join the market starting with PacifiCorp and Portland General Electric in 2026. The voluntary day-ahead market is expected to bring significant reliability, economic, and environmental benefits to balancing areas and utilities throughout the West.

EDAM will build on the considerable success of the Western Energy Imbalance Market (WEIM), which has resulted in more than $7.4 billion in financial savings to market participants and their customers since 2014.

EDAM is expected to produce additional benefits because far more energy transactions occur on a day-ahead basis than in the WEIM, where energy is sold in 5 and 15-minute intervals to make sure in real time that there is enough energy to meet demand.

“Developing this new training program has truly been a collaborative effort, and we’re thrilled to share it with our customers,” said Rashele Wiltzius, Director of Customer Readiness at the California ISO. “These sessions offer a great opportunity to prepare for the upcoming changes with both DAME and EDAM. We strongly encourage stakeholders to take part, and we look forward to supporting them through these courses.”

If you are interested but unable to attend the training sessions, video recordings of both sessions will be available on the ISO Training Center within three business days of the training.
